At the time of the 1996 Population Census 66.7% of people living outside the major Tasmanian population centres lived in Census districts where the index of relative socio-economic disadvantage was below the Tasmanian median .

Why do we use this Measure?

Improved access to employment, services and infrastructure should reduce disadvantage in rural and regional communities.

Explanation of measure

The measure is the proportion of all people living outside the major Tasmanian population centres at the time of the Population Census, who were living in Census districts where the index of relative socio-economic index disadvantage was below the Tasmanian median.
