Why do we use this Measure?

Changes in house prices relative to people’s income levels provides a good indicator of how affordable housing is in Tasmania.

Explanation of measure

The ratio is calculated by dividing the moving annual median sale price for Tasmanian residential properties sold during a reference year by the median household income for that year. Sale price data is unpublished Real Estate Institute of Tasmania data. Median Tasmanian household income is sourced from the biennial Survey of Income and Housing Costs conducted by the ABS.
