Why do we use this Measure?

As a high-risk group, young people should be aware of the potential risks, preventative measures and cures available for sexually transmitted infections.

Explanation of measure

The measure is expressed as rate per one hundred thousand for a year. It is calculated by counting the number of genital Chlamydia infections notified for persons aged 15-24 in a year, dividing by the number of persons of that age in the population in that year and multiplying by a one hundred thousand. Genital Chlamydia infections are reported as they are a proxy measure of trends in sexually transmissible infections in persons aged between 15 and 24 years. For many other sexually transmissible infections experienced by people in this age group (e.g. genital herpes, human papillomavirus) there are no data sources available indicating trends in disease.
