Explanation of measure

This measure refers to the number of children for whom the Children and Families Division of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has a responsibility arising from a legally sanctioned order under the Children, Young Persons and their family Act 1997. Only orders issued for protective reasons are included in the counts. The Department of Health and Human Services’ involvement arising from a care and protection order might take the form of total responsibility for the welfare of a child (e.g. guardianship); responsibility for overseeing the actions of the person or authority caring for the child; responsibility for providing or arranging accommodation or reporting or giving consideration to the child’s welfare. The number of children on care and protection orders is a count at a point in time - in this case, as at 30th June for each reported year.
