There was an average of 46.7 deaths per thousand Tasmanians aged 0-24 in each of the three years ending on the 31st December 2000 that has an external cause.

Why do we use this Measure?

Young people in our society are at high risk of harm. Tasmania should be aiming for a maximum possible reduction in at-risk behaviour.

Explanation of measure

The measure is derived by counting the deaths of Tasmanians aged 0-24 that have resulted from of an external cause. An annual three year average rate per thousand Tasmanians aged 0-24 is used to enable historical comparisons. Note: this indicator includes deaths of young people on roads, which is also included in benchmark 2.1.8 Road crash fatalities and serious injuries.
