Explanation of measure

This measure refers to counts of incidents attended by, or reported to, Tasmania Police in relation to family violence. The Family Violence Act 2004 and the Safe at Home program provide for an integrated criminal justice response to family violence that promotes the safety of adults and children affected by this type of crime. Police commenced an enhanced pro-arrest, pro-prosecution and pro-intervention response in October 2004 prior to the proclamation of the Family Violence Act 2004 in March 2005. A consequence of the enhanced response was an immediate increase in the number of incidents recorded by police, as a result of heightened public awareness and improved reporting procedures. From May 2005 the data collected in relation to family violence has been generated from the newly developed Family Violence Management System.
