Forestry Tasmania, Sustainable Forestry Management Report

Why do we use this Measure?

Old-growth forests are a finite and highly valued resource. Encouraging the reduction and overall elimination of clear-fell logging practices in old-growth forests provides for greater protection of their natural values into the future

Explanation of measure

The measure is the area of public land covered by old growth forest that had been harvested by clearfelling over a year ending on the 30th June. No data are available on the area of old growth forest harvested on private land each year, however, it is considered likely to be a much smaller area as most old growth mapped on private land is in inaccessible areas or in forest types with a low commercial value for forestry.
