Baseline Measurement

In the year ending 30th June 1997, research and development expenditure as a proportion of Gross State Product was 1.94%. On this measure, Tasmania was the highest ranked state and second to the Australian Capital Territory.

Explanation of measure

The measure is expenditure on research and development performed in Tasmania by organisations within the Business, Government, Private non-profit and Higher education sectors in a year ending on the 30th June. The expenditure is presented as a percentage of the Gross State product for the year. The R&D to GSP proportion is also calculated for the other States and the Tasmanian performance ranked.
