In the year 2001, the purchase of essential items consumed 73% of the welfare entitlement of an unemployed couple parenting two children aged 6 and 12.

Why do we use this Measure?

Capacity to engage in some discretionary spending may provide a better quality of life. The inclusion of this measure is a duplication of another Tasmania Together measure of progress. This version of the measure is the headline indicator for the Tasmania Together goal: a reasonable lifestyle and standard of living for all Tasmanians.

Explanation of measure

The welfare entitlement for an unemployed couple with two children aged 6 and 12 is tracked over time. Price information is also tracked for a representative basket of essential items for this household type. The measure is calculated as total essentials expenditure as a proportion of welfare entitlement.
